Colourful Activities for children  2-6 years

Activity 1 - Drawing Rainbows

A fun activity for beginning drawers is to tape two or three crayons together. when children use these crayons, they will automatically make colourful arcs and rainbows.

Activity 2 - Colourful snakes

Another sure fire method for beginning colourers is to have them colour both sides of a plain paper plate. Have them colour a black (eye) circle in the center of the plate. Starting near the outer edge, they should cut the plate around and around in a spiral so that when they are finished, the plate resembles a snake.

Activity 3 - Crayon Rubbings

Even before children can colour very well , they are able to make successful rubbings. Begin by taking the paper off one or two large crayons. Next place cardboard shapes or leaves on a flat surface. Cover them with a piece of paper. Show your children how to lay the crayon on its side and rub it across the paper. Instant shapes appear before your children's eyes.

Activity 4 - Dot Pictures

For this activity you will need a regular sized piece of medium grade sand paper. Have your child colour across the paper however they like. When it is done, turn the sand paper upside down on a piece of white paper. Next, iron the back of the sand paper for your child. When the two papers are separated they will find that the reverse of their picture appears as a delightful dot design on the white paper.

Activity 5 - Sun Catchers

Another art project you can do with your child involves crayon shavings and a warm iron. start by helping your child grate old crayon pieces onto a piece of waxed paper. Next, have your child tear up small pieces of coloured paper and aluminum foil onto the waxed paper. Cover this with another sheet of waxed paper and place a towel on top .Then press an iron over the towel to melt everything together for your child. Your child will be delighted with the result. Finally, cut the papers in to seasonal shapes and hang them in a window to catch the sunlight.
